Here is an overview of the various four mallet grips. We’ll get into some more detailed discussion on the Burton Grip and the Stevens grip the the following episodes (I don’t use the traditional grip so I can’t say much there) I’ve evaluated the grips on their ability to do the following things: Double Verticals, Independants, Alternating, Double Lateral, One handed rolls, Power, Interval spreading, Hand Spreading, Ease of learning. Here are some good resources for each grip
This book is the most detailed book on the traditional cross grip that I’ve ever seen. It contains loads of musical exercises and short pieces but it contains NO EXERCISES. If you would like to work on technical exercises, you should get Leigh Stevens’ book and apply it to the traditional grip This book is the Stevens grip bible. It not only goes into EXTREME detail on the mechanics of how the grip works, but it also advocates his technique of moving around the instrument and moving from note to note with piston strokes and pre-positioning.
